Whats good about South Central is the many helpful programs around here. Then there’s the low income housing for people how need it.The way South Central could improve is all of the violence and crimes that occur here.Another thing is the lack of education too many people possess.I do appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given here in South Central.
THESIS:The three most important events that have had the greatest impact on making South Central,LA what it is today are Gang History,Crack Epidemic, and Immigration.
The first event that made South Central what it is today is the Gang History it has. What I know about the gang history is in the 1940’s Black populations were doubled and since Black and Latino’s were restricted to a certain area,it was extremely crowded. That’s when Whites started a gang called the Spook Hunters and started terrorizing Latinos and Blacks.Thats when Blacks and Latinos started their own gangs in self-defense(Black Panthers & Brown Berets). Then the government broke them up because they were hating.I chose this because if this event didn’t happen,we wouldn’t have the many gangs today ruining everything.
The second event that made South Central what it is today was the tragedy known as the Crack Epidemic. What I know about the Crack Epidemic is that the government was having a war in Nicaragua and they needed more money,so they brought an addictive drug called Crack Cocaine and sold it here. The money earned was used to fund their war.Crack Cocaine ruined millions of lives with its catastrophic side affects. Then after the war,the government decided to make crack illegal, which put thousands of Black and Latino men in jail.If this hadn’t happened Crack wouldn’ve had the chance to rui so many lives.
The third event that made South Central what it is today is the Immigration that has occurred and it still occurring. What I know about Immigration is that in El Salvador the U.S had a big war over there, which caused over 1 million Salvadorians to immigrate to the U.S.Most settled in Los Angeles. This is important because if the U.S hadn’t been involved over in El Salvador,we wouldn’t have killed or nor unsettled millions of people.Plus the people here weren’t even ready for this.
The 3 events that molded South Central were its Gang history,The Crack Epidemic, and the Immigration. The gangs poisoned our youths. The Crack Epidemic ruined millions of peoples lives. Also, the Immigration ruined peoples homes and made people already here form negative views of people who tried to survive.I hope that South Central will learn from the unfortunate instances and press on to be the positive, productive area it was intended to be
Elaine Brown was born on March 2,1943 in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania and is still alive today. She was a Party Chief in the Black Panther Party. One of her accomplishments was that she persuaded the BPP to get into conventional politics and helped elect the first Black mayor of Oakland.I think that the fact that she wanted to get into the BPP with extremely positive intentions for women and others is what made her a good leader.
Community Walk Reflection
Basically the Broken Window Theory is when a community isn’t cared for, more crime starts to occur.I did see many buildings and other areas that were in terrible conditions. Some of the buildings that weren’t cared for include:Stores that look run down with lots of tagging. There were field with trash all over the ground with empty trash cans next to it.Even some houses didn’t look up to part. Then there were apartments that looked like a tornado swept it around for some time.Other observations I made were an old water container with lots of graffiti.I saw a car that was running with its windows down.I saw many business like liquor stores and car repair shops. This tells me that the community doesn’t care how it looks, but wants to prosper.Which I think isn’t right at all.
